Festival opening concert
CLUB FOR FIVE

CLUB FOR FIVE – artistic management of the Choral Espoo 2010 festival - will offer the audience the first samples of impressive interpretations and musical delights from its 10th anniversary tour at the Choral Espoo festival.

CLUB FOR FIVE is a unique phenomenon in the world of music, breaking concepts of what the human voice can be used for. This multi-faceted a cappella ensemble has won over audiences both in Finland and abroad with its sovereign skill. The ensemble's music cannot be classified into a single genre, as this five-piece group combines jazz, pop, rock and classical music into an unprejudiced, stylish and unique mix. One could even say that Club For Five's genre is... Club For Five!
Even though there are no instruments on the stage, you can hear everything at a Club For Five concert, from electric guitars to drum solos. However, the ensemble does not only imitate instruments; everything is merged seamlessly into skilled ensemble vocals and musical play. The stage show of the five singers: Maija Sariola, Susanna Hietala, Jouni Kannisto, Tuomas Ahola and Tuukka Haapaniemi, is full or irresistible joy, energy and virtuosity.

EMO ENSEMBLE
"To Heaven" album release concert

Photo: Antti Kangassalo

EMO Ensemble, a chamber choir of young music students and professional singers, was founded at the Espoo Music Institute in autumn 2000. Three years later, it won the international Harald Andersén Chamber Choir Competition, aimed primarily at professional choirs, and, at the same competition, EMO's performance of Esa-Pekka Salonen's Two Songs to Poems of Ann Jäderlund was awarded the prize for best performance of a work of contemporary music. Especially after winning this competition, EMO Ensemble has profiled itself as eminent performers of contemporary music, offering living composers an invaluable instrument with which to experiment.
EMO Ensemble's aim is to remain an experimental, versatile and continuously renewing group. At the Choral Espoo 2002 festival (international Songbridge festival), the choir performed water-themed music at the Tapiola swimming hall, wearing bathrobes and swimsuits.
In its concert at the Choral Espoo 2004 festival, the choir combined moving picture and light effects into its soundscape. In autumn 2006, the group was invited to Normandy for the second time for the Polyfollia festival, where it got standing ovations from the audience with its repertoire of demanding contemporary music.

TALLA VOCAL ENSEMBLE

Founded in Helsinki in 1991, the Talla Vocal Ensemble is one of the leading vocal groups in Finland. Its ten male singers have a combined range of four octaves, enabling the group to perform mixed-choir repertoire too. Talla seamlessly combines the rare male soprano voice with a deep Slavonic bass. In addition to renaissance music with multiple choirs, Finnish national romantic music, contemporary European music and folk music from the Baltic region, the choir's repertoire includes Sergei Rachmaninov's All-Night Vigil. In addition to the group's two acclaimed discs, Talla has appeared on several other records and premiere recordings for the Finnish Broadcasting Company. Talla has won several international competitions for vocal ensembles and has performed at various Finnish and international choral festivals.
The founder and artistic director of Talla is Pasi Hyökki.
The members of the ensemble are Pasi Hyökki, Olli Hannuksela, Jussi Salovaara, Paavo Hyökki, Mikko Hannuksela, Petri Muranen, Tommi Vuorialho, Juho Taskinen, Antti-Mikko Honkaniemi, Sampo Haapaniemi, Ville Matvejeff, Tapani Plathan ja Tuukka Haapaniemi.
